Police Urge Motorists To Take Care On Roads

Getting behind the wheel or sitting on a motorbike this long weekend could be the most dangerous thing you do.

Police are appealing to all motorists not to take risks on the roads as drivers will be accountable for the consequences.

“Police don’t want a repeat of the poor behaviour shown by some motorists over the Easter Break,” State Traffic Support Branch Acting Chief Superintendent Bob Gee said.

“It was disappointing to see some motorists showing disregard for the road rules and other road users.  There were appallingly high figures of speeding and drink driving.

“By now everyone who holds a license should know the dangers of speeding, drink driving, driving tired and driving without a seatbelt.

“Five people were killed over the Easter Break. Five families are living with a tragedy. Take the time to obey the road rules and you might save a life. And it could be yours.”

Acting Chief Superintendent Gee said on Tuesday, April 26 a speed camera was deployed on the Bruce Highway between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast for about 14 hours. During that time there was an average of 51 detections per hour – almost one speeding vehicle every minute.

On the previous Saturday April 16 a speed camera was deployed in the same area for about seven hours, averaging about 35 detections an hour.

“These numbers illustrate that at a time when more people were likely to be on the road and the need for greater safety was clear, as more people were speeding,” Acting Chief Superintendant Gee said.

“It is better to arrive late then not at all.”
