Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said council had given unanimous support to the rejuvenation of the Deception Bay Sports Club premises.
“Council, in its upcoming budget, will consider allocating $350,000 towards improvements to the building which will help revive and reinvigorate sport in Deception Bay ,” Mayor Sutherland said.
Division Four Councillor Julie Greer said the commitment to repair and redevelop the building meant council would be able to re-establish an active tenancy for it.
The club was previously leased by the Deception Bay Sporting Association Inc before it entered liquidation late last year.
Cr Greer said the planned rejuvenation of the club was great news ahead of this Saturday’s celebrations to launch the adjoining newly upgraded Maine Terrace grounds.
“I’m sure the local rugby league and cricket teams in particular will be pleased to see what we’ve done,” Cr Greer said.
“Over the past six months, council has relocated the reserve’s main field closer to the existing club house, provided a new synthetic cricket pitch, a new irrigation system, player shelters, and lights.
“On Saturday, local families will be able to see for themselves what the improvements will mean when they help us celebrate during a Community Fun Day from 1pm to 4.30pm that will feature entertainment, a sausage sizzle, face painting, a jumping castle, displays and tennis games for the kids.
“Spectators will be able to test the reshaped viewing mound from 3pm when the Deception Bay Bombers face Aspley in what will be their first home-ground game of the season.”
The $800,000 master planned upgrade of the grounds benefited from Queensland Government funding of $240,000.
