MBRC Explores Bat Permit

Moreton Bay Regional Council is working with the Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) on the future of a flying fox colony near the Burpengary Equestrian Centre.

Division 12 councillor, Adrian Raedel, said council was in discussion with DERM about the prospect of securing a mitigation permit for the relocation of the flying fox roost.

“There are no guarantees DERM will approve a permit, but I’m keen to go through the process to see what can be achieved to provide piece of mind for local residents and equestrian club members,” Cr Raedel said.

“The equestrian centre has taken measures to mitigate potential risks including the removal of fruit from palm trees.

“I understand DERM has also been on site to assess the colony, so the department’s flying fox experts are well aware of situation.

“Whether or not council’s application for a permit to move the flying foxes is successful is now a matter for the experts at DERM.”
