MBRC Election Signs Laws

Moreton Bay Regional Council is issuing a timely reminder to State and Local Government political aspirants that election signage needs to meet council’s local laws.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer John Rauber said that to make it easier for candidates, an election signage fact sheet outlining what is permitted is now available on council’s website at www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/elections

“In broad terms, election signage may only be erected up to 42 days before polling day and must be removed within seven days of the election,” Mr Rauber said.

“It must not be displayed on council-controlled public land, but may be displayed on private land with the permission of the owner and occupier of the property. There is a limit of two double-sided signs per candidate per property.

“Signage must be temporary or portable with a maximum size of 1.5 square metres.

“Council encourages all would-be candidates to make sure they are aware of all the rules, so that residents are not inconvenienced by illegal signage or displays.”

Mr Rauber said candidates were permitted to establish tables and nearby signage in parks or on road sides as long as the displays were staffed at all times and did not create traffic or pedestrian hazards. These displays are not permitted on median strips.

“Council is able to confiscate signage deemed not to meet the conditions of its local laws. However, by promoting awareness now, we’re hoping candidates will do the right thing during their campaigns,” he said.

Council elections are due in March next year and a State Government election must be held by June 16, 2012.
