Local Member Encourages Vigilance Against Fire Ants

State Member for Morayfield, Mark Ryan MP is reminding locals to remain aware in the fight against fire ants.

“A recent incursion is a timely reminder that that continued industry and community vigilance is needed to protect Queensland from the ongoing threat of fire ants,” Mr Ryan said.

Recently a mining company in Roma detected the ants inside false flooring within a crate that had been transported from the known fire ant hotspot of Texas, USA.

The company immediately sprayed the suspect ants with insecticide and reported the incident to Biosecurity Queensland.

“The company’s vigilance in reporting these fire ants highlights the national fire ant program’s effective engagement and education strategies, and I commend the company for their prompt action,” Mr Ryan said.

“As a precautionary measure, Biosecurity Queensland will conduct ongoing surveillance, treatment and monitoring of the area.

“There is no apparent risk of fire ant spread from this incursion and no specific quarantine directions have been issued at this time.

“Due to their quick thinking and fast response fire ants have been prevented from spreading to a new area within Queensland.”

Mr Ryan said this incident provides a timely reminder for local businesses to check any imported material for the pests.

“Heightened awareness and vigilance from businesses particularly those importing machinery will be of great assistance in the battle against fire ants.

“Anyone that finds suspect ants should contact Biosecurity Queensland immediately,” said Mr Ryan.

Since fire ants were first discovered in Australia in 2001, the national fire ant program has been very effective in significantly reducing the threat of fire ants on our economy, environment and way of life.
