Seventeen-year-old go-getter Benjamyn Hazelton is claiming a world hugging record set at the Urban Country Music Festival (see the video).
Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland offered his congratulations on Benjamyn’s effort on Sunday.
“Benjamyn decided he wanted to try to break a world record, realised he could raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation at the same time, and then went about achieving his dream,” Mayor Sutherland said.
“This is a splendid effort and shows just what young people can achieve with motivation and support. I’d like to congratulate not only Benjamyn, but everyone who helped him.”
People lined up to give Benjamyn a hug between 11am and midday at the Urban Country Music Festival at the Caboolture Historical Village , while official timekeepers and counters recorded the effort.
Benjamyn gave out 2,805 hugs in 60 minutes. After the attempt, Benjamyn he said he was feeling a little tired, but elated.
“I’d just like to thank everyone who supported me – I couldn’t have done this without them.” he said.
Early figures showed Benjamyn raised $228 for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Benjamyn said he intends to send the details of his attempt to the Guinness Book of Records for official recognition.
