Family and friends turned out in force on Monday, May 30, to honour the late Nev Benson at a ceremony naming a local Donnybrook bridge after him.
Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Division One Councillor Gary Parsons said Mr Benson had been heavily involved in the construction of the bridge on Donnybrook Road which spans Elimbah Creek.
“Nev spent 30 years working for Caboolture Shire Council, building bridges and roads. It’s fitting to name this bridge for him, since it’s the last one he worked on,” Cr Parsons said.
Cr Parsons said the request to name the bridge after the Elimbah local, who managed a strawberry farm as well as working for council, was made by his good mate Ray Bishop, who knew Nev for a number of years and always described him as a good, honest, hardworking bloke.
“The Bensons were one of the first families to settle in the Elimbah area. Historically they were professional fishermen, but they’ve also been involved in the development of the local community and the area in general,” Cr Parsons said.
Cr Parsons said Nev , who is survived by his widow Linda, still had a number of family members living locally and it was pleasing to see a number of them represented at the ceremony to honour Nev.
