MBRC Road Safety Achievement

Moreton Bay Regional Council has had a road safety win.

Mayor Allan Sutherland said Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Safer School Travel Program had won the Local Government category of the 2011 Queensland Road Safety Awards.

"With the number of students being driven to school increasing, the Safer School Travel Program has been working in partnership with local schools to improve traffic and parking safety," Mayor Sutherland said.

“Council has established a road safety behaviour change program with schools and infrastructure planners that’s not only set the benchmark for others to follow, but is also an award winner,” Mayor Sutherland said.

“This is a program that adapts lower cost educational and awareness improvements to school environments for big results.

“If it saves just one young life from road trauma then it’s a worthwhile investment.”

The Mayor said the 2011 Queensland Road Safety Awards recognised people and organisations who refuse to accept road trauma as an inevitable consequence of travel.

“The win demonstrates my council’s continued and genuine commitment to road safety and I want to thank all staff involved in the Safer School Travel Program for their dedication to the safety of our community,” Mayor Sutherland said.

“It’s a Moreton Bay grown program that I encourage other councils to seriously consider adopting.”
