MBRC Continues to Monitor Floods

Moreton Bay Regional Council is urging residents to continue to plan and prepare for localised flooding amid predications the region will continue to experience moderate to heavy rainfall over the coming days.

Mayor Allan Sutherland said council and the Local Disaster Control Centre were continuing to closely monitor rainfall, dam release and flood information.  A Local Disaster Management Group meeting was held at 11am today.

"Although the rain has eased in some areas, the region is still on track to receive 50 to 100mm today – with more to follow throughout the rest of the week,” Mayor Sutherland said.

"Flooding has receded in a number of local catchments around Burpengary and Caboolture but the Stanley River around Woodford is continuing to rise slowly and we will be watching this situation very closely as well as possible impacts on surrounding roadways.

“Releases at the North Pine Dam have been wound back but Youngs Crossing Road is likely to remain closed for some time due to inflows from Sidling Creek.” 

Around 90 roads are closed while 50 roads are passable with care.

Mayor Sutherland said three further evacuation centres had opened at Caboolture, Morayfield and Woodford to support centres at Narangba and Deception Bay that remained open overnight.

“With plenty of wet weather still on the cards and a saturated catchment, we are continuing to make sure we have appropriate arrangements in place,” Mayor Sutherland said.

Mayor Sutherland said 264 requests for assistance had been received by the SES in the last 24 hours.

“Around 45 SES volunteers are in the field today mainly assisting with leaking roofs and sandbagging,” Mayor Sutherland said.

Preparing for flooding

Know the risks of flooding around your property – council has region-wide flood maps on its website www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/floodplains

• Be prepared with a household emergency plan about what you need to do if you are at risk of flooding.
• Your emergency plan should include a kit of emergency numbers, a battery-operated radio, food, bottled water and first-aid kit.
• Program your battery-operated radio to 101.5 FM.
• Stay tuned for regular updates.

Preparations underway for possible minor flood releases from North Pine, Wivenhoe and Somerset dams

Seqwater’s Flood Control Centre has been mobilised as a precaution and as preparations get underway for possible controlled minor gate releases from North Pine, Wivenhoe and Somerset dams.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 3:55 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Marburg and Rosewood. These thunderstorms are moving towards the north. They are forecast to affect Fernvale and Mount Nebo by 4:25 pm and the D'Aguilar Ranges by 4:55 pm.

Damaging winds, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones are likely.

28mm of rainfall was recorded in 10 minutes at Adams Bridge (southwest of Ipswich).

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500. 

The next warning is due to be issued by 4:55 pm.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Southeast Coast districts.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 7:05 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near the area south of Kingaroy, Mapleton, the area south of Lake Boondooma, Yarraman, Moore and Montville. These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to northeast. They are forecast to affect the area southwest of Noosa Heads and Proston by 7:35 pm and Kilcoy, Noosa Heads and waters off Noosa Heads by 8:05 pm.

Damaging winds, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones are likely.

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500. 

The next warning is due to be issued by 8:15 pm.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Central Coast and Whitsundays, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast and parts of the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Northwest, Central West, Channel Country, Maranoa and Warrego and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.

Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) urges residents in Caboolture, Kilcoy, Wamuran, Beerburrum, Woodford, Mount Beerwah and parts of the Sunshine Coast to prepare themselves for severe storms likely to hit these areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe storm warning likely to produce damaging winds, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones in these areas within the next hour.

Residents in these areas should move their car under cover or away from trees, secure loose outdoor items, seek shelter preferably indoors and never under trees, avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm and beware of fallen trees and powerlines. 

It is vital people avoid driving, walking or riding through flooded creeks and causeways - remember, if it's flooded, forget it. Think about the consequences of your actions and don’t risk your life or the lives of others. The currents are deceptive and the dangers are hidden beneath the surface. These hazards can trap people and cause significant injuries at a moments notice.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 2:25 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Ipswich, Woodford and Mount Mee. These thunderstorms are slow moving. They are forecast to affect Caboolture, Lake Manchester and Mount Beerwah by 2:55 pm and northern Bribie Island, Beerwah and Peachester by 3:25 pm.

Very heavy rainfall and flash flooding are likely.

50mm of rain has been recorded near Ipswich in the last hour.

* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast and parts of the Capricornia districts.

ENERGEX crews restore power to 17,000 customers after storms

ENERGEX crews have worked through the night to restore power to more than 17,000 homes and businesses across South East Queensland following an evening of wild weather in the region.

A series of storm cells rolled across South East Queensland during the evening, bringing with it a rapid-fire lightning display producing 100 strikes every minute.

In total more than 28,000 lightning strikes were recorded on ENERGEX’s South East Queensland power network, mostly in a three hour period between 7pm and 10pm.

Lightning forced ENREGEX crews to remain staged at their depots until the storm passed and it became to operate.

The worst hit areas, from a power perspective, were the Brisbane Valley, Lockyer Valley, the southern Brisbane bayside and the greater Ipswich area, however a number of other areas were also impacted.
