Wyatt Roy, Federal Member for Longman, is urging people to support local small business by shopping locally during the Christmas period. 

Nielsen polling released late last week revealed that consumer confidence had fallen well below neutral for the first time in over two years, as Australians worry about the global economic situation. 

During the third quarter of 2011, consumer confidence dropped from 103 points in Q2 to 97 points in Q3. 1 

Mr Roy said that in light of decreased consumer confidence, it was vital that locals did everything in their power to continue to support local small businesses. 

“Particularly during this Christmas period, we need to be supporting those local businesses which are doing it tough,” said Mr Roy. 

Mr Roy said he was concerned about the implications of low consumer confidence on an already depressed local market. 

“The best thing governments can do is get out of the way and let businesses do their job. 

“This Labor government is making a bad situation worse, with policies which are not reinforcing consumer confidence in the market,” said Mr Roy.

Government shifts blame on solar payment to local business

The future of solar businesses is still unsure as the Government continues to shift blame for payment for solar rebates. 

A response to Mr Roy’s enquiries to the Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, about local business Solar Panel Express, highlighted the government’s efforts to distance itself from the issue, claiming that it was “not the Government” who was responsible for reimbursing businesses. 

“The Minister simply said that Solar Panel Express, and others like it, will either have to wait for the payment – without giving any indication of a timeline – or face the prospect of on-selling their debt,” said Mr Roy.

Mt Mee Students apply interview pressure on Wyatt Roy MP (Podcast)

It might be too early for primary school students to vote in elections, but yesterday students from Mt Mee State School had the opportunity to grill their Federal Member of Parliament.

The students yesterday quizzed Wyatt Roy on live radio. Mr Roy was submitted to gruelling questions from three students on local community radio station 101.5FM.

Mr Roy answered questions on a range of topics including the Carbon Tax, the role of a politician and what he has done over the past twelve months.

On a lighter note, one student asked for some advice on how someone could be involved in politics, to which Mr Roy answered “lots of hard work” and said it was important to get out and have a go.

Mr Roy said that the interview with the students was tougher than many he had done in Canberra.

Tax Help for Longman

Wyatt Roy, Federal Member for Longman, is providing tax assistance to the Longman community. 

Mr Roy is offering tax help from his office until the end of October, to assist people in preparing their tax returns. 

Individuals wishing to make an appointment to receive assistance with their tax return should contact Mr Roy’s office on 5428 7755. 

Taxpayers should bring their group certificate, Centrelink Summary and any other documents relevant to their 2010-2011 Tax Return.
