Art Expands in 3D

Four sculptural pieces will join the Moreton Bay Region Art Collection through council’s annual acquisition program.

Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Lifestyle and Amenity spokesperson and Division Seven councillor, David Dwyer, said the four separate purchases totalling about $15,000 had been recommended by an independent selection panel to help expand the region's collection.

“This year, with the opening of Caboolture’s new Hub art gallery in the not too-distant future, our panel chose three-dimensional works,” Cr Dwyer said.

“Because of the delicate nature of the works and the availability of suitable storage, the purchase of this type of art was somewhat limited until now.

"With The Hub and purpose built art storage facilities moving closer to completion it's opening up new avenues for the region's collection.”

The 2011 acquisitions are:

Flutter – seven translucent porcelain pieces by Gwyn Hanssen Pigott
Sea of Glass – a vessel with carved surface, multiglazed and mid-fired by Jeff Mincham
Hermannsburg pots – three pots of various sizes created during a residency project at Redcliffe City Art Gallery.
A bit on the side – blown and cold worked glass by Scott Coleman

Council has also acquired the top two 2011 Moreton Bay Art Awards entries – Stephen Baxter’s painting Gold Coast Winter 2010 and Claude Jones’ multimedia work Beast of Burden.
