Moreton Bay Regional Council has declared it
cannot support the Federal Government’s proposed carbon tax if it drives up
rates for residents and local businesses.
Division 12 councillor Adrian Raedel moved
that council oppose the carbon tax but also signal its willingness to work with
the Federal and State Governments on alternative strategies to reduce carbon
emissions.
“While Moreton Bay Regional Council has resolved to
oppose the carbon tax, we are prepared to look at alternative mechanisms to
reduce carbon emissions that don’t involve a new tax on our residents and
businesses,” Cr Raedel said.
“I’m also keen to see the Local Government
Association of Queensland work with the Moreton Bay Region on this.
”That’s why I'm recommending the carbon
tax is a major topic for discussion at next month’s LGAQ conference, only
then can we begin to get a clear understanding of the financial impost it
will have on councils right across the state.
“I’ll admit I’m very worried about the possible
impact of a carbon tax on the ratepayers and residents of this region.
“The motion I put to council today also triggers a
thorough review of the potential cost of a carbon tax to Moreton Bay Regional
Council and its effect on rates.”
