ENERGEX restores supply to 4,500 South East Queensland homes

With the first storms of the season hitting South East Queensland last night, ENERGEX is reminding residents to prepare their family and home for the storm season.
ENERGEX crews worked quickly and safely through the night to restore power to around 4,500 South East Queensland customers affected by the storms.

The first of a series of severe storm cells crossed South East Queensland around 1pm yesterday bringing around 20,000 lightning strikes, hail and heavy rainfall.

Despite these challenging conditions, ENERGEX safely restored electricity to the vast majority of customers by 10pm.

ENERGEX’s Mike Swanston said last night’s events are a timely reminder that storms can hit at any time.

“It’s hard to believe, but last nights storms are proof that another storm season is here already,” he said.

“Thankfully these storms didn’t cause major damage to the electricity network, but if high winds become an issue we might not be so lucky next time.

“It’s very important for people to take the time to prepare their family, home and neighbourhood for the coming storm season early by securing loose objects, trimming overhanging tree branches and preparing a storm kit.”

Mr Swanston encouraged residents to join ‘Suburban Storm Troops’ – a campaign encouraging residents and community groups to hold a street clean-up on the weekend of 17 and 18 September.

“Suburban Storm Troops is an excellent way for people to get their neighbourhood prepared for the coming storm season, and win some great prizes in the process,” he said.

Nominations for the first phase of the competition close on 7 September - just one week away – so people should get in quickly. Visit energex.com.au to nominate or for more information.
