State Member for Morayfield, Mark Ryan MP has welcomed news that local train commuters will soon be able to access free wireless internet on trains.
In an Australian first, free wireless internet technology will be rolled out on all 64 new Queensland Rail passenger trains from October, Mr Ryan said.
“This is great news for local train commuters as this has never been done before on trains in Australia so we are again raising the bar when it comes to improving public transport.
“The trial has been a huge success, the technology is now fully operational on the test-train with customers able to sit back and take advantage of the free internet on their journey to and from work, study or visiting.
“Free wi-fi will make rail travel time on the new trains more productive and fun for many local commuters.
“This project isn’t only about free internet for commuters, but it also increases security capacity by allowing live streaming from the CCTV security cameras on board the Wi-Fi trains.
“This is an excellent outcome for passengers and another example of our State leading the way.”
Mr Ryan said the installation of Wi-Fi on the first of 64 new trains would begin in October, with Wi-Fi across the entire 160 and 260 series fleet expected by the end of next year.
“These new trains will travel across the entire CityTrain network, so at anytime, anywhere, a train commuter will be able to access the internet for free.”
The Wi-Fi trial started late last year on one train which travelled across the CityTrain network.
The trial included tests of 3G coverage capability of internet and CCTV live streaming. There was an average of 228 weekly users on the test train, with more than 5000 in total during the trial.
